ADBI Expert Urges Global Action to Ensure Human Security, Highlights Progress in South Asia
ADBI’s Dil Rahut called for timely global action to ensure human security amid rising climate and sustainable development threats at the 14th South Asia Conference hosted by the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi on 17-18 January. Rahut noted that climate change, environmental degradation, food and energy shortages, and cyberattacks can only be resolved via the international community. He discussed the potential for a Bhutan-India hydropower project to facilitate energy transition and climate mitigation. Rahut concluded by stressing the need for greater regional and global cooperation and intersectoral solutions.

ADBI Dean Promotes T7-T20 Collaboration to Bridge G7-G20 Solutions
ADBI Dean and Think7 (T7) Japan Lead Chair Tetsushi Sonobe stressed the importance of T7-T20 collaboration during a pair of events in India. Dean Sonobe described think tank collaboration as crucial to accelerating Group of 7 (G7) and Group of Twenty (G20) cooperation to address global challenges at a special T20 program hosted by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries in Bhopal on 16 January. Optimizing T7-T20 dynamics can better provide the G7, G20, and partners innovative strategies for achieving shared resilience and sustainable growth, he explained. During the 14th South Asia Conference in Delhi on 17 January, Dean Sonobe discussed G7 Japan’s focus on boosting engagement with the Global South and how it reflects G20 India’s slogan One Earth, One Family, One Future. He addressed these issues in a session chaired by Ambassador Sujan Chinoy, Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses Director General and T20 India lead chair. Ambassador Chinoy expressed support for amplifying T7-T20 cooperation.

ADBI Dean Discusses Think Tank Support for Multilateralism at T20 India Inception Conference
ADBI Dean Tetsushi Sonobe explained how think tanks can boost multilateralism amid increasing geopolitical fragmentation at the Think20 (T20) India Inception Conference in New Delhi on 13-14 January. He underscored the importance of leveraging think tanks’ convening power via T20 and Think7 (T7). He said this approach could scale up research-based policy solutions and collaboration to help bridge efforts by the Group of 7 (G7) and Group of 20 (G20) to drive sustainable economic development for all. Dean Sonobe is T7 Lead Chair under Japan’s 2023 G7 presidency and a co-chair of the T20 task force on macroeconomics, trade, and livelihoods under India’s 2023 G20 presidency.

Senior Officials, Global Experts Outline T7 Japan Roadmap for Fostering Urgent G7 Policy Breakthroughs
The Think7 (T7) roadmap for helping Group of 7 (G7) countries and partners confront unfolding global challenges during Japan’s 2023 G7 presidency was discussed in the virtual T7 Japan inception conference hosted by ADBI on 12 December. Japan’s G7 Sous-Sherpa Kazuhiko Nakamura of the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed T7’s importance for transmitting research-based policy ideas to the G7 to support coordinated problem solving in a fragmenting world. ADBI Dean and T7 Japan Lead Chair Tetsushi Sonobe said T7 openness to policy research from experts worldwide aims to deliver more impactful solutions to global leaders under T7 Japan’s theme Addressing Crises, Reigniting Sustainable Development, Bridging the G7 and G20. He and other co-chairs of T7 Japan task forces described their topic coverage and emphasis on facilitating engagement between the G7 and developing countries to advance G7 policy objectives.
