Understanding Social Perceptions of Postsecondary Education and Training in Bhutan
This brief presents the first descriptive evidence of students’ and parents’ preferences for and perceptions of technical and vocational education and training and higher education in Bhutan.
In determining the choice between pursuing university degrees or technical and vocational education and training (TVET), parents and students need a holistic idea of labor market conditions. Beyond employment and salary, it is important to consider job satisfaction, good working environments, and career possibilities. Surveys were conducted that gauged expectations of employment and salary level around age 30, which were compared with actual data from the Labour Force Survey in 2020. The results showed that 60.0% of students and 82.0% of parents saw TVET as an opportunity for obtaining employment, but both groups underestimated the potential earnings that TVET can bring.
