Making an impact: Working at ADB

Meet Giovanni Verlini, Principal Communications Specialist from Italy

What is your role at ADB?

My name is Giovanni Verlini, I’m from Rome, Italy.

I work for the Department of Communications, specifically for the Knowledge Support Division, and I head the multimedia team.

With my colleagues we take photos and shoot videos. These visuals are like stories for us. They are the stories that we use to show the different issues that people from across Asia and the Pacific face, and they showcase the good work that ADB does across the region.

What is your background?

I have a degree in Literature from the University of Rome and a Master of Arts in Media and Communications from the University of London.

My first work experience was an internship with the Associated Press in Rome. Then I worked in London as a business journalist for 12 years.

And then prior to joining the Asian Development Bank, I was in Vienna for six years where I worked for a United Nations agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

What do you like most about working at ADB?

One of the things that I really enjoy doing is working with my team. They are true professionals and great colleagues!

The work we do is demanding and intense. But above all, it’s fun and we have such a great time together.

Our work is about telling the stories of the many amazing people that we meet across Asia and the Pacific.

We want to bring these stories closer to audiences not only in Asia and the Pacific but beyond. That is why we have been expanding our digital presence and making sure that our photographs and videos are accessible to as many people as possible through platforms like our multimedia library, the ADB website, Flickr and YouTube, among others.

At a professional and human level, I find the work we do to be truly meaningful and rewarding.

How does your work contribute to developing Asia and the Pacific?

We put a face to the work that my colleagues at ADB do. So that it’s not just about numbers or statistics – with a good photo or video, you can see the beneficial impact that we have in the region.

In a way, you can say that we connect people, showcase solutions, and influence decisions.

We hope that the work that we do in multimedia and communications ultimately helps shape the way innovative and sustainable solutions are delivered to developing Asia and the Pacific.
