The report covers the 49 regional members of ADB. It discusses trends in development progress and the challenges to achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth across Asia and the Pacific. This 53rd edition looks at how most economies in the region have bounced back to varying degrees from the COVID-19 pandemic. A gradual recovery of cyclical industries, the release of pent-up consumer demand, and increased confidence levels have contributed to developing Asia’s economy.

To put into practice the “leave no one behind” principle of the Sustainable Development Goals, detailed and informative data is crucial. The 2022 report features a special supplement, Mapping the Public Voice for Development—Natural Language Processing of Social Media Text Data, which explores how natural language processing techniques can be applied to social media text data to map public sentiment and inform development research and policy making.

Part I. Sustainable Development Goals [click to expand]

The SDGs comprise 169 targets across 17 goals to be achieved by 2030. This section includes data tables and brief analyses of trends for select SDG indicators for which data are available. The indicators are presented according to the United Nations SDG global indicator framework.

Part II. Region at a Glance [click to expand]

The regional tables are grouped into eight themes: People; Economy and Output; Money, Finance, and Prices; Globalization; Transport and Communications; Energy and Electricity; Environment; and Government and Governance. This chapter also presents analysis of key trends for select indicators, highlighting important recent developments in Asia and the Pacific.

Part III. Global Value Chains [click to expand]

This chapter depicts participation in global value chains by economies in Asia and the Pacific, and their sector-specific comparative advantages in terms of exports. Participation in value chains involves cross-border trading transactions of inputs used in different stages of production—from raw materials, to intermediate inputs, up to the final products purchased by the end consumers.

Part IV. Stories Behind the Data: Harnessing Administrative Data for a More Resilient Data and Statistical System [click to expand]

Administrative records, though typically built for regulatory purposes or to supplement administration of various government programs, are a potentially rich source of information that can be triangulated with survey, census, and other types of data to provide potentially more nuanced, timely, and granular development indicators. Though administrative data may not be originally collected for statistical purposes, there is increasing recognition of its rich statistical potential, as it can produce statistics through data integration.

Statistics by Economy

These tables for the 49 regional ADB member economies contain information about a wide range of statistical indicators on population, labor force, national accounts, production and price indexes, energy, money and interest rates, government finance, external trade, balance of payments, international reserves, exchange rates, and external indebtedness.
