1. INTERNSHIP TOPIC:
"Promoting Livable Cities in ADB's urban operations in Central and West Asia"

2. SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under Strategy 2030, Asian Development Bank (ADB) is set to strengthen its role as a knowledge solutions partner and will bring more value to its developing member countries (DMCs) by combining finance with knowledge. A regional knowledge and support technical assistance (KSTA) for OP4 in Central and West Asia is proposed to support the efforts of the DMCs to build livable cities that are green, competitive, inclusive, and resilient by applying innovative and integrated solutions in project development, design, and execution. The TA will be aligned with ADB’s Strategy 2030 and its Operational Plan for Priority 4: Making Cities More Livable, 2019-2024, which aims to improve the coverage, quality, efficiency, and reliability of services in urban areas; strengthen urban planning and the financial sustainability of cities. The proposed assignment will produce recommendations to support selected cities in DMCs to incorporate integrated and innovative solutions for livable cities in ADB’s ongoing or new projects in cross-sector and cross thematic areas, including tourism development, clustered city development, economic corridors etc.

The Intern will provide inputs for a proposed KSTA for OP4 and the Sustainable Tourism Development in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Region (CAREC) KSTA. The Intern will conduct research on emerging urbanization trends, spatial patterns and infrastructure gaps relevant to urban development and utilities service delivery (e.g. urban population, water supply coverage and continuity, water quality, NRW, sewage and sanitation, air quality, housing, energy efficiency, land value capture, building information modelling etc.) to support knowledge and project preparation in Central and West Asia with a focus on Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The Intern will also support the ongoing CAREC Tourism KSTA to create linkage with the CWUW urban operation pipeline by identifying areas of investment and conducting initial research on the project sites identified for investments.

3. PERIOD OF ASSIGNMENT:
• Duration: 8 weeks (with a possibility of extension)
• Timing: June 2023

4. LOCATION: ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines (or virtually, depending on prevailing travel restrictions)

5. EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
The Intern will prepare and present two brief papers on 1) Emerging urbanization patterns in Central and West Asia and 2) Integrated Tourism and urban development.

Qualifications

6. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in Urban and Regional Planning, Economic or Human Geography, Transport Planning, Economics, City/Urban Design, Architecture or related fields.

7. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Atleast 2 years of work experience in the fields mentioned above. Experience with masterplans or urban design, morphological, spatial and data analysis in the urban sector. Experience working with computing software for urban planning and design.
